Area Description
Boone is located in the NW corner of NC, in the heart of the Appalachian Mtns known as WESTERN NC or the Mountain Area. In Watauga Co, which has a land area of 312 sqmi & adjoins TN, served by several US Hwys & in close proximity to 3 Interstates. NCDOT has recently completed the widening of US 421 from Boone to Winston-Salem.
The Watauga Co portion leading to Wilkes Co opened in ‘03. The widening of US 321 from Lenoir to Blowing Rock is under way. Boone, the county seat, has an area of about 4 sqmi & an avg altitude of 3,333'. Boone was recognized Nationally as a Resort area in ‘05. Ranked as one of the "Best Small Towns" it is a bustling Univ. town & the center of tourism & commerce. Known for its health care, education, shopping & the arts, Boone offers a palette of opportunity surrounded by 4 seasons of changing scenery.
